A plan to install bike lanes on a busy thoroughfare connecting the beach cities has received an initial endorsement from Redondo Beach leaders.
Still in the study stage, the project would add bicycle lanes to Aviation Boulevard from Pacific Coast Highway to Rosecrans Avenue, and along Marine Avenue from Aviation Boulevard to the Redondo Beach Metro Green Line Station.
“The car has been king for so many years in Southern California, we’ve stopped accommodating all other modes of transport,” said Lenore Bloss, a Redondo Beach harbor commissioner who spoke in favor of the bike lane project during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to sign off on a preliminary engineering study by a private transportation consultant, allowing for further review to be conducted on the feasibility of installing bike lanes on the busy stretch of road.
The decision also allows representatives from the Blue Zones Project, a nonprofit community health initiative sponsored by the Beach Cities Health District, to apply for grant funding on the city’s behalf.
“I think we ought to move forward with this,” said Julian Katz, a member of the South Bay Bicycle Coalition, which has endorsed the plan. “Aviation with more safety would be ideal for commuters to get to work.”
